Canadian Data Sovereignty & PIPEDA

Where your data lives is a governance decision. Here is why a Canadian-owned VPS changes the calculus. This is general information, not legal advice.

PIPEDA and keeping personal data in Canada

Canada's federal private-sector privacy law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), along with provincial equivalents in British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec, holds you accountable for personal information you collect — including when it is handed to a third-party processor. Regulators expect comparable protection and transparency about where data goes. Running your workload on a VPS that keeps data inside Canada, on infrastructure operated by a Canadian company, is the simplest way to keep that accountability chain short and easy to explain to your customers and auditors.

The problem with US-headquartered providers

A provider headquartered in the United States — or a Canadian brand that merely resells one — can be compelled to produce customer data under the US CLOUD Act, regardless of which country the servers physically sit in. That reach is a documented reason many Canadian organizations, particularly in regulated sectors, prefer an operator that is Canadian-owned end to end. When Sucura Networks holds your data, it is subject to Canadian law, not the extraterritorial reach of a foreign statute.

Residency for regulated and sensitive workloads

Health information, financial records, government-adjacent projects, and any dataset with contractual residency clauses often carry an explicit "must remain in Canada" requirement. A Canadian VPS gives you a clean answer: the compute, the storage, and the operator are all in Canada. You get in-country data residency without negotiating an enterprise contract or paying an enterprise premium — the same budget KVM cloud, positioned where your compliance obligations need it to be.

Canadian VPS FAQ

Straight answers on sovereignty, pricing, networking, and deployment.

Is a Canadian VPS PIPEDA compliant?

A VPS is infrastructure, so compliance ultimately depends on how you configure and operate it — but hosting on a Canadian VPS makes PIPEDA obligations far easier to meet. Keeping personal information inside Canada, on hardware run by a Canadian-owned company, removes the cross-border transfer questions that arise when data sits with a US-headquartered provider. This is general information, not legal advice.

Where is my data physically stored?

Your Canadian VPS runs on hardware we own and operate at 245 Consumers Road in Toronto, Ontario. Your data stays in-country on our four-node KVM cloud. It is not silently replicated to a foreign region, and it is not a reseller slice of someone else's platform.

Are you a Canadian-owned company?

Yes. Sucura Networks Inc. is a Canadian-owned and Canadian-operated network operator running AS398999. We are not a reseller of a US hyperscaler and we are not a foreign-owned brand with a Canadian label. We own the network and the hardware your VPS runs on.

How much does a Canadian VPS cost?

Plans start at $3.75/mo for VM-1C-2G (1 vCPU, 2GB RAM, 55GB NVMe, 5TB bandwidth) and scale to $60.00/mo for VM-8C-32G. Hourly billing is available on every tier, from $0.005/hr on the entry plan. Prices are in USD.

Do you offer hourly billing?

Yes. Every Canadian VPS can be billed hourly, from $0.005/hr on VM-1C-2G, or on a predictable monthly plan. There is no minimum term and no setup fee. Destroy an instance the moment you are finished and billing stops.

Is DDoS protection included free?

Yes. SucuraGuard DDoS protection is included at no extra cost on every Canadian VPS, with over 2Tbps of scrubbing capacity and sub-second detection across nine points of presence. There is no separate line item and no upsell to stay protected.

Can I run BGP on a Canadian VPS?

Yes. Full BGP support is available through AS398999, so you can announce your own IPv4 and IPv6 space or build BGP labs on your Canadian VPS where your use case allows.

How fast is deployment?

Provisioning is automated. After you register in the Nexus panel and add credit, you pick a size and operating system and your Canadian VPS boots in seconds with a live IPv4 and /64 IPv6. There is no manual approval step for standard plans.
